PTE-A Writing: Body Paragraph Form

The Body Paragraphs for Write Essay usually always follow the same pattern due to the 20-minute time constraint (55 minutes or 1 hour for all Writing Tasks).  Since a computer marks your text (an algorithm, undoubtedly), it is extremely important to follow the format below with every type of writing prompt.

Body Paragraph 1

Sentence 1: Topic sentence (topic + controlling idea)

Sentence 2: Support sentence (supports the controlling idea)

Sentence 3: Detail (fact = empirical evidence, quotes from professionals or use examples) Examples are best since empirical data and quotes will not be checked!

Sentence 4: Conclusion (this sentence may not be necessary for the ‘opinion’ prompt only because you will offer two reasoned paragraphs on the same side of an argument)

Body Paragraph 2

Sentence 1: Topic sentence (topic + controlling idea)

Sentence 2: Support sentence (supports the controlling idea)

Sentence 3: Detail (fact=  empirical evidence, quotes from professionals or use examples) Examples are best since empirical data and quotes will not be checked!

Sentence 4: Closing sentence
