IELTS Reading: Task 4 – Table Completion
Table completion is a common task on the IELTS Reading exam. You are given a table of information, which usually has blanks in it, and you are required to fill in the blanks with the appropriate words from the reading text. Usually, no more than one or two words are used.
The information in the table will match the information in the text, but it will very likely be paraphrased and include synonyms. Once you’ve located where the answer is in the text, you’ll need to comprehend the text to identify the word or words you need to fill the gap in the table. This type of task’s form can be different from the example below, but they generally are in a table form and not in order than in the reading text.
Note: Answer the question with the EXACT words from the text.
This is another task that forces the test taker to think of parts of speech or the type of word that may fit in the blank (adjective, noun, verb, adverb, preposition, pronoun, conjunction, etc.).
Note: the sentences have to be grammatically correct as you read through the answers.
Look at the headings or any other context clues in the table for hints as to what word will fit.
Procedure
- Read the instructions carefully and note how many words are needed to fill in the blank.
- Observe the table and study the headings and look for context clues as to what type of word(s) /information is needed to fill in the blanks.
- Scan the text – read the topic sentence of each paragraph (highlight or underline words) that are related to the information you are looking for.
- Return to the table and highlight or underline keywords and then return to the text scanning for this particular information (be aware of synonyms and paraphrased text)
- Find the answer by reading around the text you have highlighted.
- Enter your answer on the answer sheet and make sure the spelling is correct and that the answer is grammatically correct when read.

| Phase Two: In-Person EngagementThe second phase of consultation on the review of municipal legislation was designed to dig deeper into the issues raised during the first phase of consultation. Organizations and professionals who use the Municipalities Act 1999, the City of St. John’s Act, the City of Mount Pearl Act, and the City of Corner Brook Act in a significant way were especially encouraged to participate. Phase Two stakeholder engagement consisted of:
• In-person engagement sessions consisting of 17 polling questions and seven small group questions were held in 11 locations throughout the province between May 29 and June 20, 2018. Feedback from the in-person sessions is available for viewing in the combined format used for analysis. • An online questionnaire, available from July 20 through August 10, 2018, was completed by 16 individuals and a total of 24 questions. The combined results of the online questionnaire are available for viewing. • Two interactive presentations, including polling questions, were delivered at MNL and PMA events. Raw polling data can be viewed online at the following links: o MNL Municipal Symposium results (May 4, 2018) o PMA Convention results (June 8, 2018) Phase two differed from phase one in that the department asked specific questions to get additional feedback or clarification on issues related to municipal structure, municipal purposes, municipal and provincial powers, professional conduct, municipal services, and municipal revenue sources. The results presented below are related to the questions posed. Who Participated? The in-person sessions were attended by 145 participants. The online questionnaire was completed by 16 participants, five of which also participated in an in-person session. The majority of participants (85 percent) were residents of towns, with additional participants from LSDs (11 percent) and cities (four percent). |
