Task 1 Overview

Task 1 of the IELTS exam asks you to describe an information graphic, which can come in several different forms. The standard outline for this report looks like this:

Summary – paraphrase the IELTS Task 1 prompt 1 or 2 sentences (maximum)

Main Trends – note only the obvious points on the graphic in 1 or 2 sentences (maximum)

Detail – complete the information, usually with statistical information provided usually in four or five sentences (but the length may vary with the type of task)

The only variation from this outline is if you are offered 2 or 3 graphs, then you can create a paragraph for each graph in the Detail portion of your report. In any event, your report should be between 150 and 170 words because you will not have time to complete your Task 2 essay should you write more.

  1. Pie Charts

The chart below shows the percentage of social media usage in Canada in 2017.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The pie chart illustrates the percentage of people who use different forms of social media in 2017 in Canada.

Overall, Facebook and Twitter accounted for the largest portion of social media usage, whereas Snapchat and LinkedIn were in the minority.

The social media form of Facebook was used the most at 58 percent, and of the remaining 42 percent, Twitter had over 50% of that proportion at 22%. Snapchat made up 75% of the remaining 20% at 15%. Finally, with only 5% of the total, LinkedIn represented the least used form of social media.

One possible reason for this percentage distribution of social media may be based upon the length of time the company has been in business. Under this assumption, if Facebook is the oldest company, then its usage may be directly proportional to this fact. Thus, in order, Twitter is the second oldest, followed by Snapchat as third, and LinkedIn as fourth. (152 words)
