Read, Then Write

Praxis: Answer a question given on the screen in writing.

*Note: The answer will disappear after 30 seconds, so you have to remember it as you continue to write. A proper topic sentence will help you remember the question prompt.

Time: 5:00 minutes.

TIPS:

Write a paragraph using proper paragraph form (strive for 100+ words).

Reread your paragraph for errors if you have time before going on to the next question.

For example:

5:00

Respond to the Question in at least 50 words

You must know Paragraph form. You can make up a response if necessary as you are being marked on your writing ability!

Read, the Write gives test-takers 5 minutes to write a complete paragraph. * Remember, you can make up a story or an event to complete this task.

Support Sentence 1

Detail/ example sentence

Support Sentence 2

Detail/ example sentence

Support Sentence 3

Detail/ example sentence

Concluding Sentence

  • Note: there are 8 sentences in the paragraph form above to write. If a test-taker averages 13 to 20 words a sentence, he or she will easily write over 100 words.

For example: Describe a time you were surprised. What happened?

I was surprised when I won a free trip to Florida. I bought a ticket for a prize draw at our local mall. The grand prize was a new car, but I won the second-place prize. I had completely forgotten about the ticket I bought because the draw was 2 months after I bought the ticket. However, I did think about winning a new car. I imagined myself driving around the city ‘looking good’. In any event, my husband received the phone call that we won a trip to Florida. We were happy with that because we could take a vacation, and we were both surprised because we never really won anything! (112 words)

Topic Sentence:  I was surprised when I won a free trip to Florida.

Support Sentence 1: I bought a ticket for a prize draw at our local mall.

Detail/ example sentence: The grand prize was a new car, but I won the second-place prize.

Support Sentence 2: I had completely forgotten about the ticket I bought because the draw was 2 months after I bought the ticket.

Detail/ example sentence: because the draw was 2 months after I bought the ticket. (Complex sentence)

Support Sentence 3: However, I did think about winning a new car.

Detail/ example sentence: I imagined myself driving around the city ‘looking good’.

Concluding Sentence(s):  In any event, my husband received the phone call that we won a trip to Florida. We were happy with that because we could take a vacation, and we were both surprised because we had never really won anything!

*Remember: As long as your response is organized and attempts to vary Sentence Structure, you will score high on this task. The algorithm that reviews your writing searches for organization structures in your writing:

Note the signal words: ‘However’ and ‘In any event’

The Topic sentence is most important because it answers, ‘Did the test-taker answer the question?’ Then a series of Support and detail/ examples sentences show you are giving an organized response. A concluding sentence(s)(maximum of 2 sentences) that refers back to the topic sentence, summarizes your paragraph or offers a future outcome completes a perfect response.
