Duolingo: Task 5, Read Aloud

Read Aloud

Just ‘Read’ the statement presented on the page.

Praxis: You must click on a record button and then read the sentence presented on the page.

Time: 20 seconds.

TIPS:

You only have 20 seconds, so if you have time, say the statement out loud 1 time before you record it.

This task is graded by an algorithm, so speak at an even tempo while reading. Try not to speed up and slow down.

For real-time examples of how to read, go to the blog at mjgeducation.com (type in Duolingo for all results)

For example:

:20

Record yourself saying the statement below

:05

“The climate change problem is everybody’s problem.”

You must know: Speak clearly at an even pace.

Read Aloud is a straightforward exercise where the test-taker reads a sentence into a microphone. This task has three different levels that move from Level 1, short sentences or questions to Level 2, where the sentences or questions are a little longer, perhaps with noun clauses and a couple 3 syllable words, to Level 3, which includes longer sentences (compound sentences usually), more perfect verb tenses, and more multi-syllable words. The Passive Voice may be used as well, but you just have to read most sentences in a regular or normal manner – as if you are answering a question in a classroom or talking with a new friend.

For example:

Level 1

  1. Do you like my car? (Note that this is a Yes or No question – your intonation (the rise and fall of your voice) should rise to the question mark (as with the above question) or the end of the question. ‘Do you like ↑ my ↑ car↑?

Yes or no questions always begin with a verb or a modal verb (Should, Could, Would, Maybe..etc.)

Good English speakers will also let their intonation fall with ‘Wh’ or information questions, such as ‘What is your name↓?

Just be wary of the question form if it comes up on the Read Aloud task.

Many statements you will read will not have any intonation.

For example:

  1. We do not have gym class today. (No intonation)
  2. He likes to ride his bicycle. (No intonation)

Level 2

  1. She sometimes works at the library on the weekends.
  2. My girlfriend said she would wait at the bookstore for me.
  3. She is certain that our instructor will give extra marks.

Level 3

  1. I do not know what the movie is about or who the leading actors are.
  2. She will have returned from Japan and started her new job when you have permission to relocate.
  3. Cartological and azimuth readings are corrected, and the atmospheric tests are done as well.
