Title the Passage

Praxis: Choose a suitable topic from the passage you read. There will 4 choices to choose from.

Time: 7:00 or 8 minutes for all 6 questions unless the algorithm is ‘satisfied’ with fewer responses.

TIPS:

Read all of the options – don’t choose quickly.

Choose the title that has the topic and ‘generally’ covers all areas mentioned in the text.

For example:

7 or 8 minutes for all six

questions

5:14

Passage

We think of sleep as a time when the mind and body shut down. But this is not the case; sleep is an active period in which a lot of important processes occur. How this happens and why our bodies need such a long period of inactivity is still a mystery. But scientists understand some of sleep’s functions, and the reasons we need it for better health and wellbeing.

Select the best title for the passage.

1.  How much sleep do we need?

2. What is a good night’s sleep?

3. The importance of sleep for young people

4. Why do we need sleep?

You must know: Reading for Topic Sentence or Main Idea, Paragraphing

This Task asks the test-taker to ‘Select the best title of the passage’. The best way to do so is by knowing what a Title phrase always has:

  1. Titles always indicate accurately the subject and scope of the study.
  2. Titles avoid using abbreviations.
  3. Titles use words that create a positive impression and stimulate reader interest.
  4. Titles use current words and ideas from a particular field of study.

Procedure:

  1. Read the passage – find the Topic Sentence (the topic or what the text/paragraph is about should be obvious)

*Note: The title is a “privileged” place in the text because it draws the reader’s complete attention – it must draw your interest and be accurate

  1. Who is the audience for this text? Sometimes, titles are easy to choose, or eliminate choices, because a text may be written for ‘children’ let’s say, and not ‘adults’.
  2. Read the passage again and then read the ‘Title’ options.
  3. Choose the title that most accurately reflects what you have just read.

It might be a catchy phrase and not serious in tone – It’s a Frog’s Life. This title generalizes the passage.

Or it may be serious and more academic: A Description of the Habitat, Lifespan, and Breeding Patterns of the South American Tree Frog. This title ‘summarizes’ the entire passage.

Since the text you will read is only a paragraph or 2 in length, you should be able to winnow down an answer quickly and accurately. Your choice has to be accurate to the passage whether all the ‘Title choices’ are general or summarized, so read the title choices carefully.

For example

Select the best title of the passage.

A helpful way of life, humble nature, and spirit characterize our small city among residents. The region’s loveliness, legacy, moderate climate, and hospitable sense straightaway fascinate people who are familiar with our area and its snowy categorization.

  1. Rodville, a Charmed Life.
  2. Rodville, a Snowy Place in the Hills
  3. Rodville, a Charming Place to Live.
  4. Rodville, A Fun Place to Live.

Remember: A title’s ‘CONTENT words’ are usually Capitalized, but the articles and prepositions are not (as seen in the example above).

Best answer: 3    (1. refers to an opinion)
