Highlight the Answer

Praxis: Read a question on the page. Then read the passage (a paragraph) on the page. Then Highlight the correct answer by dragging the part of the text that answers the question. Your answer will show in the box at the bottom of the page so that you can check your answer. Click the next button to continue to the next question and text. You may do this task up to 6 times in the time allotted.

Time: 7:00 or 8 minutes for up to 4 of the same type of questions.

TIPS:

Highlight only the answer to the question asked. This may only be a word, a phrase, or an entire sentence.

Read your highlighted text and check ‘your answer’ before you go to the ‘next’ question.

Try to be precise with your answers as you will do 6 of these questions in the allotted time.

Passage

The ocean floor is an area almost 2.5 times greater than the total land area of the planet.

Researchers are able to see where tectonic plates have slipped and slid over the millennia. In an ongoing process, convection currents in the molten mantle cause the plates to slowly move about the Earth at a rate of a few centimeters each year. Many ocean floor features are a result of the interactions that occur at the edges of these plates.

Shifting plates may converge, diverge or transform each other. As plates converge, one plate may dive under the other causing earthquakes, forming volcanoes, or creating deep ocean trenches. Where plates have diverged from each other, molten magma has flowed upward between the plates forming mid-ocean ridges, underwater volcanoes, hydrothermal vents, and new ocean floor crust. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is an example of this type of plate boundary. Boundaries known as ‘transform boundaries’ are formed when two plates slide past one another. This is seen in mid-ocean ridges which are often associated with earthquakes due to zig-zag offsets.

You must know: Reading: Scanning technique, Paragraphing

This task asks the test-taker to ‘Highlight’ (copy by dragging the mouse’s cursor) the part of the text that answers a question. This is scanning!

Procedure:

  1. Read the question first.
  2. Then read the entire passage or ‘Scan’ for the answer to the question
  3. Highlight the answer (just the answer or the entire sentence where the answer is found)

*NOTE – Never copy more than one sentence of the text as your answer will be considered wrong. If you are confronted with a sentence that has several clauses (compound-complex), only highlight the clause with the answer!

For example:

France was ruled by monarchs for a period of 1362 years up until 1848. Though most died of illness or old age, many suffered at the hands of their countrymen. Louis XVI, for example, lost his throne during the French Revolution of 1789 and was eventually guillotined in 1793. His wife, Marie Antoinette, was executed later the same year. Several French monarchs were assassinated or poisoned. After the July Revolution of 1830 the then reigning king, Charles X, fled France with his life under threat. He was succeeded to the crown by Louis-Philippe d’Orleans, who several years later, fearing for his life, fled to England booking passage under the pseudonym, Mr. Smith. Louis-Philippe, or Mr. Smith, was the last of the French monarchs.

Click and drag text to highlight the answer to the question below:

What is the original name of France’s last King?

You would highlight the whole sentence or just the part of the sentence that contains the answer:

  1. He was succeeded to the crown by Louis-Philippe d’ Orleans

Or

  1. Louis-Philippe d’ Orleans
