Prompt 1

Success is often measured in terms of how much money somebody has earned.

Do you think wealth is a good measure of success? How else could we measure whether a person is successful or not?

Introductory Paragraph

Sentence 1: A person’s success in life can be measured in many ways.

Sentence 2: Although many people consider material wealth to be the basis for a person’s success in life, there are other ways to measure success.

Sentence 3: This essay will discuss two different measures of success, material wealth and

social welfare, and explain why the latter is better.

Paragraph 1

Sentence 1: There are several reasons why the accumulation of a person’s wealth is a common

way to assess a person’s success.

Sentence 2: Material wealth can be appraised and summed into a dollar value that represents

a person in the minds of many.

Sentence 3: For example, Bill Gates, a software developer and owner of Microsoft, is estimated

to be worth billions of dollars.

Sentence 4: In this way, his fortune exerts power over people and politics, so his reputation and

success is well-known in America and around the world.

Paragraph 2

Sentence 1: Any man or woman can decide what the true measure of their life is: a family, to

help others in need, or work politically to change laws to benefit others in his or

her community or country.

Sentence 2: Humanitarian issues fill the news of the world every day as many people need help.

Sentence 3: For instance, Mother Teresa, a nun who devoted her life to helping others, did not attempt to gain personal wealth.

Sentence 4: There is much satisfaction and success in helping others in need.

Conclusion

Sentence 1: In conclusion, this essay has discussed two different perspectives of success.

Sentence 2: In my opinion, it is much easier to see success in terms of material wealth than it is to know the abstract success of helping other people. (255 words)

(Remember: it does not matter what position you take in an argument; rather, it is how well you argue that matters most)
