PTE-A Write Essay: The Problem /Solution Essay

This prompt should be recognized immediately as a Problem/Solution; therefore, you can use a ‘How’ question for your 2nd introductory sentence, and write the usual disinterested sentence for the 1st.  The ‘how’ question, like any question, is a rhetorical form when used in this way. Perhaps it is easier to use than the traditional concessionary form.

Please see the prompt that follows:

 

Prompt 1.

Freshwater resources are becoming inadequate in some large cities. In March 2018, Cape Town in South Africa imposed severe water usage restrictions.

 

What are the causes and what are the solutions to this problem? Support your arguments with reasons and/or examples from your own experience or observations.

 

Introductory Paragraph

Sentence 1: Many cities around the world are struggling to find fresh water for their citizens.

Sentence 2: How are these cities going to overcome these water shortages?

Sentence 3: This essay will discuss some of the issues and solutions surrounding water

shortages and explain how people can overcome water problems locally.

 

Paragraph 1

Sentence 1: Water shortages around the world have many causes, including climate change and

overpopulation.

Sentence 2: However, in the cities, people tend to overuse water resources in and around their

homes.

Sentence 3: For example, people take long baths and overwater their lawns too often.

Sentence 4: People should be made more aware of how to conserve water.

 

Paragraph 2

Sentence 1: On the other hand, there are many things people can do to save water in their city.

Sentence 2: People can be made more aware of where and how they can save water.

Sentence 3: For instance, taking showers instead of baths or watering their lawn by way of a

rain barrel can save a lot of water locally.

Sentence 4: Making people more mindful of the ways in which they can save water will help

save water in major cities.

Conclusion

Sentence 1: This essay has discussed some water shortage problems and their solutions.

Sentence 2: In my opinion, people can help overcome water potential water shortages because it

is in everybody’s interest to conserve water.
