Task 6, Listening for Viewpoints

Task 6 is the most difficult Listening Task; however, if you have done well on the listening tasks to this point of the Listening test, you can achieve the scores you want. This task is difficult because Paragon Testing creates a test whereby it is possible to achieve a CLB 12 score, the highest possible score.

This task is a challenge for all listeners. Test takers will listen for 3 minutes to a single person talk about a controversial issue that has a least 2 different viewpoints or perspectives. This task is made difficult to understand because it uses high-level vocabulary and usually some complex ideas. The test taker will have to make inferences and deduce from what they hear to allow them to make a choice of the 4 paraphrased answers. You will have 4 minutes and 20 seconds to answer 6 questions (approximately 43 seconds to answer each question.

How to take notes:

While listening you should write down dates, times, names of people, and events because the questions ask test-takers to follow the recording from start to finish. Generally, this type of listening will help you through tasks 1 to 3. In tasks 4, 5, and 6, it is important to understand the argument as well, the problem and possible solutions, or the gist/ the meaning of the conversations or what the single speaker is saying – this is generally how this test gets more difficult as it progresses. You will still take notes in the same way, but you will also have to understand the meaning (the gist) of what is being said.

Websites to practice:

  1. Obviously, the CELPIP website is the best place to practice understanding how the test progresses.

On this website, you can get a feel for the test by doing 2 practice tests/ listening tests. This is an excellent way to begin to feel comfortable for this test. You can practice the L/S test (speaking and Listening) or do the Full test that includes Reading and Writing, along with Listening and Speaking.

  1. Randall’s Cyber Listening Lab is another place to practice your note-taking and understanding of the meaning/ gist of a conversation. This website is loaded with easy, medium, and difficult listening tasks, and it asks you 5 questions after each listening activity. You should practice here for hours to increase both your note-taking and understanding.
