Task 4, Listening to a News Item

Test takers listen to a community-related news story that is approximately 1.5 minutes long. You must pay attention and take detailed notes and understand the ‘gist’ of what is happening in the story.

There will be 5 questions laid out on the page and the test taker has to fill in a phrase to complete a sentence – each of the 5 questions will offer a drop-down menu of 4 choices to choose from.

Obviously, the first check for the test taker is that the sentence has to be grammatically correct when read, but the sentence must also be aligned with ‘what the news story was about’ or the gist of

what is happening in the news story.
