2. General Meaning questions

These questions usually ask about the main idea or the topic of a recording. The General Meaning questions may force the listener to string together many ideas from a passage to get to the correct answer. Test-takers will have to take notes of the key points in a passage so that they will be able to refer to them when answering the question. This type of question uses words like ‘most or mostly’, ‘main or mainly’, or asks for the ‘main idea’. Also, these questions attempt to approach a wide aspect of the passage using words like ‘problem’ or ‘solution’. These questions are more’ general’ than specific detail questions.

For example:

Why are men in the city? (the recording may only talk about the ‘events’ at a conference – digital recording session, multi-platform processors, wi-fi etc.)

Answer:

2. to attend a rugby conference
3. to attend a Shakespearean play
4. to attend a radio conference
